Ultimately, imposter syndrome is that nagging feeling of self-doubt, which can be intensified by cultural and societal expectations. We can also feel a pressure to defy stereotypes in predominantly white spaces. But you’re not alone, there are ways to navigate this.

Here are some common experiences you might encounter

  1. The burden of representation – feeling like you carry the weight of your entire community on your shoulders, and the fear of failure feels like a ton of bricks.
  2. Stereotype threat – that anxiety about confirming negative stereotypes based on your race or gender, leading to a knock on your confidence. It might also mean that instead of being able to relax and be yourself in various situations, you are instead distracted with worries about how others might see you.
  3. Micro-aggressions: – you know those subtle or not-so-subtle acts of discrimination we experience that make us question if we truly belong.
  4. Lack of representation – sometimes, it’s tough to see successful women of colour in certain fields, making us wonder if we’re the exceptions rather than the rule.

But don’t worry, sis! We’ve got some strategies to help us overcome these challenges

Overcoming Imposter Syndrome as a High-Achieving Woman of Colour

  1. Embrace your identity and achievements – celebrate the unique strengths, perspectives, and accomplishments that make you who you are. Your cultural heritage is your superpower!
  2. Seek support and community – surround yourself with like-minded individuals who understand your experiences and can lift you up when you need it most.
  3. Challenge stereotypes – reframe those negative narratives and focus on your amazing abilities and contributions. We’re not here to fit into anyone’s boxes! Equally, focusing on living your life via the gaze of another is exhausting. It is not your role to help other people to have a different understanding of the world!
  4. Cultivate self-compassion – be kind to yourself, sis! You are deserving of all your achievements, so let’s replace self-doubt with affirmations.
  5. Seek mentorship and role models – connect with mentors and role models who have faced similar challenges and can guide you through the tough times.  LinkedIn can be a good place to go for that. Reach out to people who are ahead of you on the road you’re on.
  6. Expand your network – engage with diverse communities that uplift and empower you. We’re stronger when we stand together!
  7. Challenge the “Superwoman” myth – take care of yourself, set boundaries, and prioritise your wellbeing. We don’t have to do it all alone, and it’s okay to ask for help.
